What happened with Twii?

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

Long story short, lack of time, lack of passion, lack of ideas. Twii has seen only one update this year, until now, that's 7 months of no updates. I have been playing Pokémon Go and lots of other social games, so I want to transition over to a social gaming network, but not for gamers.

More Twii coders in the next few months.

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

It's time for Twii to grow, we have been working hard to separate the Twii code to allow more developers to work on the Twii systems. We are hoping to have a separate coder for each section of the site. So how will this work? Well we are going to be working with people we trust a lot. The following are the areas we will be working on, with this change adds extra site costs, but faster updates, and with it we are going to double our server processing power.

Want to get your account verified?

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

So now that the site has more users we also have more verified requests. We don't want to remove the verified system because of constant requests so we are going to handle it a little differently. Just click "Support / Contact" on the left sidebar and in the content area give us some links to other online profiles you have. We will look at them over the next few weeks. All submissions on this contact page will include your Twii username so you don't need to enter that.

Did you know we have a Android app?

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

We have been growing lots over the last year, and the biggest thing we have done in the last few months was the launch of an official Twii Android app. The Twii app allows you to get notifications of activity on the site and chat with friends and family.

Old API has been retired

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

The old API where you would request pages with different urls like get_profile.json has been retired for the query system. The query system adds way more uses, and more features with far less code. It also runs faster with the site cache system the site uses. The old API has not been updated in years and contained a lot of broken data that returned as empty JSON values and was making the API slow for large data as it had no cache system for the old get_types. It was time to retire it.

Google font's are no more.

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

After doing some world wide speed testing of the site we found the bottleneck lowering our speeds and loading times. Google Fonts. For some reasons it wont load in some countries and it is slower in all others, it is the largest request, for the time it takes a 24KB font file from Google to load it takes us the same time to load 6 versions of a 80KB icon font from our servers. So we are hosting the OpenSans font ourself and ditched using the Google font service. Now people in any country can use the site without waiting for it to first load.

Large system change, we moved to NGINX.

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

So today, well this morning at 3:32AM, we moved the main server proxy system from Apache to NGINX, with Apache back end for image serving and sub server work. This allows our main proxy to not be a problem as we grow and to take advantage of NGINX SSL cache tools. This should improve the speed, and lower errors, but because of this a large amount of the Twii base URL system and API had to be rebuilt to make it work. This will no doubt bring errors that have not been seen yet, but should overall be better for Twii and the speed of the site and app. If you have any problems just click the contact link in the left menu.

This is so amazing, I will not be sleeping for a week!

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

So today is the best day for Twii so far, we have passed 1,000,000 status posts thanks to all our amazing users. I started Twii just over 4 years ago, but it only launched under the Twii name a few years ago, and only public for around 2. So for me this is amazing! I would like to thank all the users who continue to use and LOVE Twii. I would not have enjoyed making the site if it was not for you.

New Database System For 2015

, Posted By Anthony Rossbach

So far during 2015 the systems that power Twii have been getting some updates, and the biggest one is a few weeks away. Most sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr store images on normal servers and they are loaded on demand, but we want to do something different. We are moving to DB ONLY storage of images, removing the physical files per image for a few massive database's holding images in tables. This will allow for quicker image fetching, all future images are saved in raw, and generated on the spot. So if render quality goes up in the future old photo quality will also improve. We can also then provide download of the RAW uploaded photo in the future for the user.
